Quivering For A Nintendo DSi

Come Nov 1, 2008 Nintendo DSi will be available for sale in Japan for a mere 18,900yen (inclusive tax).

Zaini said that if we are in Japan right now, he doesn't mind spending a night or two queuing for it. Madness.

What's so special about this Nintendo DSi as opposed to Nintendo DS Lite which both he and Raimie own now?

For starters:
  • the addition of two cameras (a 0.3 megapixel VGA camera on the spine and a camera on the outside of the shell). Pictures taken with the DSi can be manipulated and edited via the touch screen and can be instantly shared with any other DSi users in the area.
  • 12% thinner than DS Lite, it's handheld screens are 17% bigger at 3.25 inches.
  • SD memory card slot for external storage of photos, downloaded software and to play AAC audio and there'll be on-board memory also.
  • Full music playback functionality, including adjustable pitch and playback speed.
  • Built-in Nintendo DS web browser, to download games and keep them on the DSi.
Anyone wil be joining the queue for the sale on Saturday?

  1. What's 18,900 yen in ringgit? That sounds veeery little. Like, aren't food even in the 100 thousands? Uhh, i saw this on some site sometime ago.. the camera thing is pretty cool. I wonder what kind of games will make use of it.

Hmm, with a camera, microphone AND internet connectivity, they could probably use the DS as a video phone.

p.s. I remember the site saying something was missing. Like a slot of somekind.

  2. 18,900 used to be around RM600 but now that our RM is weaker than yen, it is about RM700++. Still cheaper if you buy it there than buy it in Malaysia when it is finally available here, I should say.

  3. I just got a DS last year so I won't be in line, but it sounds kind of neat depending on how good the camera is.

  4. Hmm..IMHO, the DSi as a first purchase may well merit its novelty features. "Novelty" here, at least for the moment is the type of games that plagued the Wii. Games that is fun if you have friends to play with but not necessarily alone. But if you have a DSL, I don't see the point in buying it since DSL own library of games can already choke you.

  5. @thomas & soullighter,
I guess it boils down to wanting the latest gadget available in town. :D
A thinner DSi than the current DSL and camera is reason enough to own one!

  7. Lina, if you're looking to import it, be prepared to spend more as I heard for the DSi, there's a special levy cost to import it out of Japan..at least for now. Crazy eh? -_-U

crazy indeed. Hopefully there won't be after 2009. After all, it will be launched to the rest of the world in 2009.
