The Global Gender Gap Report

How did Malaysia fare? Malaysia (96) is ranked above Japan (98) but below Indonesia (93), Singapore (84) and Philippines (6).

Check out the The Global Gender Gap Report 2008 (in pdf) or Countries highlights and profiles here.

And in response to Foong's question on why we are above Japan, The Global Gender Gap Report measures the gap between men and women in economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, health and survival hence the low ranking for Japan than other developed countries. Japan has among the widest gaps on economic participation and political empowerment, contributing to its low ranking.

An interesting point (and used to be a sore point for our male MPs, so much so that they debated on lowering the criteria for male students entering universities) is the higher participation of female students entering tertiary education at a ratio of 32:25.

  7. Malaysia ranked higher than Japan? How come? I thought Japan more advanced than us so their ranking should be higher. Wow! I'm surprised with Phillipines!

  9. @foong,
    I've updated my post to answer your queries. :)

    @Shaun,
    lower no is better. If you're ranked in the 100 and above, then it is on par with Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Egypt... Korea is ranked 108.
