If anyone remembers, I wrote a post about going on a m mission to find cool manhole covers while vacationing in Japan. If you don't, check out the post here. The mission was inspired by Jamaipanese's post on similar subject.
We didn't cover many cities in this trip and I missed the chance to photograph a couple of the manhole covers in Sendai and Kawasaki but here are my findings during our trip in September. Enjoy!
Akita City, featuring the paper lanterns on poles
Bessho Onsen's manhole cover - even the fire hydrant cover with the fire truck looks cute.
Matsushima's featuring the view of the bay
Tokyo Metropolitan Area
Ueda City
I am definitely looking forward on going drainspotting and looking for more manhole covers in our next trip to Japan. What? You didn't think I'm done with Japan yet, did you? XD

salam jumaat lina,
ReplyDeleteThere was a docu on NHK last abt a man who goes all over Japan doing the same thing. Then he added certain history to some odd manholes. After finishing this project, contact the tv people and tell them. Make it worthwhile. (But that man did it with his webcam).
I am like a little bit shock looking at this manhole pictures Lina? Why don't we in Malaysia do something like this? Mesti tourist pun sibuk nak bergaya kat manhole ni kan? Hehehehehe....
ReplyDeleteI learn many Japanese thing from your blog.
Fantastic. The covers here are boring, just a manufacturer's name. :-(
ReplyDelete@Kak Lela,
ReplyDeleteCompared to that guy, my effort pales in comparison, I bet. Maybe next year I'll have more photos to show. What's Naha's City manhole cover like?
@zezebel,
ReplyDeleteNo point doing it here in Malaysia. Boring plain manhole covers pun boleh kena curi for teh scrap metal value, inikan nice one. Asyik berlubang ajelah lubang longkang kita nanti! We have too many vandals in our country! :(
@John,
ReplyDeleteWhich is how manhole covers in my country look like too.
Those manhole covers in Japan are indeed fantastic and those images on them are not just some random image that were picked by the municipal offices. The images showcases the pride of the individual city - be it about their festivals (refer to Akita & Bessho Onsen) or their area (Matsushima). Awesome!
My fav is the 2nd last one. Lovely! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I guess there's beauty in everything and everyone. But sometimes, it can be so hard to see the beauty when there are thorns, thistles and lalang..haha.
@Mei Teng,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your second para. LOL
Yes still remember you blogged about those fancy manhole covers last time!
ReplyDeleteSo many nice designs! I wish KL also have such pretty manhole covers!
ReplyDelete@foong,
ReplyDeleteYou still remember? Cool!;)
I wish too. But then, sure kena steal one!
They are so pretty! I would look out for them too if I go Japan.
ReplyDelete@ECL,
ReplyDeleteLook them out! It's great fun doing it. Well... at least for me that is. ;)
some nice finds there, I inspired you and now you have inspired me to look out for them when I get to Japan next year!
ReplyDeleteHow absolutely artistic they are. We have plain old manhole covers here. It's nice to see such creativity.
ReplyDelete@Jamaipanese,
ReplyDeleteDo! It was great fun for me to look them out and I bet you would have fun doing it too. How many cities are you planning to cover next year? IIRC, you are going in the summer months, right?
@Poetic Shutterbug,
ReplyDeleteEven without the color, the covers are so nice arent they? :)
How nice! These are what makes some places special. Like in Minneapolis, the street corners have characters from peanuts because the creator is from there. It makes you remember the place.
ReplyDelete@jellybelly,
ReplyDeleteIndeed. I would love to see Peanuts manhole covers one day! :)
wow, these are such eye-catching covers and ours are so boring looking.
ReplyDeleteonly in Japan!
ReplyDelete@Life Ramblings,
ReplyDeleteI agree.But I guess it's not worth the effort for us to do these nice manhole covers esp when stealing them are rampant here. :(
@Ayie,
ReplyDeleteTrue. ;)
