Welcome To Nara

If you use the JR line to get to Nara, stop for a while before you head out from the station. Write a message on a mushroom and paste it on the board. Nara welcomes you! ^^
Then, take a photo with Sento-kun.

I don't have a deer's antlers in my possession, but I have this on perched on my head occasionally and startle unsuspecting folks with it. kakaka
Taken during last week's Taiping International Marathon, somewhere at KM18 I think; at a sponge station. Hahaha

p.s. I'd like to think me & my ears are way cuter than Sento-kun. Bwahaha... Now now Don't puke.

  1. Nice smile. There are many kinds of photo spots like this.
You can take many photos. :)

  2. Oh, Sento-kun! This character was much discussed about whether it's cute or not as a mascot when he was unveiled.
I have been used to looking him. ^^
I had been in Nara for a month on business. But I couldn't go sightseeing in the town. (; ;)

    1. A much discussed mascot (negative or positive) is better than a completely boring and ignored mascot. At least it brings attention to the thing/place its promoting? No? xD

    2. Exactly. There are many mascots in Japan but only a small number of mascots can be popular.
He is a one of winner.

    3. Sento-kun (whichever version) is(are?) certainly doing the promoting. xD

  4. We drove to Nara when we visited a few years back, so missed all this cool stuff at JR Station. You make me want to visit again now to see it all :)

    2. It was great. We borrowed a mini van and had both families with us :)

    3. Sounds fun... :)
Both families you say? Bonding time!

  5. Why the mushrooms? Do you get magic powers like becoming bigger? Perhaps an extra life? ;)

Sento-kun. Not sure if they should be called deer antlers since I think it is a Buddhist deity or semi-deity. Not too sure though. Time to go on a Google search. :D

    1. I'm rather stupid about Buddhist deity and kinda lazy to do much googling nowadays so can I wait for your further research and share it here? Please? Pretty please?

    2. I'm not so smart with the Buddhist deities either. I did do a quick wiki search.

"Sento-kun is meant to resemble an amiable young boy who has the antlers of a deer, an animal which has long been regarded as a heavenly protector of the city."

Guess I was wrong about the deer antlers... He may not even be a deity as the Wikipedia article just says he is a little boy...

  6. The other half of the Dru-Ru manzai act ^^ also wants to know why mushrooms? What do mushrooms have to do with Nara?

I don't like that mascot. It's almost as creepy as Sky Tree's. I still maintain Gunma-chan is the cutest mascot in Japan!

    1. The mushrooms? It's something to do with the season? No? Yes?
      When is mushroom season anyway?

Ooooo I do so agree with you! I wanna hug Gunma-chan. Or buy lots of the plush toys. xD

    2. Not sure when mushroom season is. Maybe Ru can enlighten us. ;)

Oh, I think the Suica Penguin is the cutest character. If we can include "living" mascots, the Softbank dog, "otoosan" or "kai-kun" or whatever the character's name is. Kai is the real name of the dog. ^^

Then again, those mascots are based on my complete bias for loving dogs and the Saviour loving penguins. :D

    3. When is mushroom season?!? IT'S NOW! Autumn = mushrooms! Now's the season to spend ¥50 000 for 100 grams of Kyoto matsutake!

The Suica penguin is also cute, but Gunma-chan still has my heart, because hiking in Gunma is better than hiking in JR stations. ^^

    4. So which one of you two are going to spend 50,000yen for mushrooms? ^^

    5. I'll leave that to Ru. I'm too poor to buy it. Besides, I can't tell the difference between regular and luxury mushrooms anyways. Paper mushrooms might be okay too...

    6. Yeah, if someone is posh enough to enjoy regular afternoon teas at posh places, I bet she knows how to differentiate mushrooms. kekeke
