Squid on manhole covers in Hakodate! Cool! Why? Because it's the town's pride or something, I'm told. You'll see squid statues/replicas everywhere.
and this one, depicts the Star Fort; a massive star-shaped fort Western style citadel for the defense of Hakodate and inside the star is the Red Brick Warehouses.

In Kauniainen (Finland) manhole covers feature squirrels, and in Espoo it's a horseshoe. Finns love nature as much as Japanese, believe :)
ReplyDelete*I believe :)
DeleteI really need my butt over to Finland someday, instead of just couch-travel around the country through the Travel Channel. ;)
DeleteFinland is pretty ^.^
DeleteIt's a nice hobby to take manhole photos. We would say a Japanese old pentagon about a star-shaped fort Western style citadel.
ReplyDeletethanks for the info, Minoru. ^^
DeleteThey make great momentos of your trips and good memories. Got to be seafood for Hokkaido as they have some of the best in the wold.
ReplyDeleteAgree. :)
DeleteYou've infected me! I've also started taking photos of manhole covers! Just the other day in Saitama I saw a beautiful one with maple leaves, and I snapped it for you. ^^
ReplyDeleteShow! Show! Show! :)
DeletePresume all manhole are male no got female? hehe Great designs in all the manhole covers.
ReplyDeleteWell, there were no "unisex" hole found. LOL
DeleteHakodate is famous for its squid. The squid caught in the straight between Aomori and Hakodate is full of squid as well as Maguro. They often catch the squid to use as bait, although Aomori is famous for Maguro, Hakodate is famous for squid. Not sure why they split the two though.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they split it so that each region can have a claim at something? Fair and all that? ;)
DeleteSO short this post!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy not?
DeleteOh, squids are the town's pride? How come?
ReplyDeleteGoogle it up lah! ;p
DeleteHave you captured all the manhole covers? I wanna see more! : )
ReplyDeleteManhole covers I have are based on the number of cities we visited. And you should have seen quite a lot already as I've been taking photo of manhole covers and putting it up since like... 2008! xD
DeleteHakodate is famous for the star, as you may know. :)
ReplyDeleteI want to see 五稜郭.
Actually, I wanted to see it too.
DeleteOne day. :)
Is there any great camping site in Hakodate? :D I wish to visit there!
ReplyDeleteThere should be.
DeleteI bet Cocomino would know. ^^
It's like your family is on a perpetual holiday in Japan!
