Random Mascots Found Around Town

Dru had this post up about Osaka mascots, which is awesome by the way. Go check it out, if you haven't done it yet.

We bumped into a few, hard at work at a few main train stations around Japan but I know next to nothing about them.

But hey! Never a problem to put up a post about them here. Sue me! (any information on them are very much appreciated). ^^
Hard at work promoting a region to commuters at Shin-Osaka station, if I'm not mistaken. A place famed for ninja, pretty damsels and crows?
The thing on top of her head looked like a turd at first glance to me, but that's actually fish roe. Where do you suppose we found this gal?  No prize for the correct guess though. ;)
Found this chap in Nara
and this naughty fella in Kappabashi. He comes in all shapes in sizes though...
and we have our very own mascot for my blogs too...
modelling for an onsen shot. Muahaha

  2. My vote goes to ... no, not the kappa, despite the fact that he's a neighbour! I vote for Gunma-chan because I love horses. ^^

    2. Yes, it's an itty bitty cutie-pie liddle horsey awww!

PS: See? I can speak the cute language!

  3. Dru's posts are all great but in that mascot one he didn't include his own personal mascot, which is a little jug of sake. ^^

PS: If you ask me, Dru has trained Sox to carry a little barrel of sake around his neck, like St Bernard dogs carry kegs of brandy for lost travelers. :D

    1. Hahaha... I'm imagining Dru as a cute character holding a sake. (as opposed to the sake being his mascot) ;) Dru & Sox. Too cute! ;)

    2. Me as a sake mascot? Don't mind too much, but it would have to be a crane. At least then I can pretend to fly. ;)

As for Sox, I wouldn't put sake in him. At least not in Japan. I can get decent sake everywhere. I would have him carry vodka. :D

Great, no I'll be a firefly fundoshi wearing crane mascot. Can cranes wear fundoshi?

    3. I bet Ru can find some obsecure folklore that depicts a fundoshi wearing crane somewhere. No? Yes? xD

      Vodka carrying Sox? :)

    4. I'm sure she will.

Yup, vodka carrying Sox. I discovered that as my cold has peaked, having a bit of vodka helps me feel a bit better. I'm calling it home made Nyquil. You don't have that in Malaysia, do you? It's as strong as alcohol.

    5. Never heard of it. xD

Alcohol over medicine? Alcohol sounds more fun to take. ;)

    6. But then, alcohol consumption for health reasons isn't covered under health insurance, or is it? ;p

    7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NyQuil

Nyquil is a mix of medications, but includes alcohol. :D

    8. Aaahhh...

I guess the cough mixture we got here works that way... as there are way too many reports of illegal selling of those - for people to get high.

    9. Me,
I am more versed in NSAID than any other medicine. I even have a favourite pill. ;p

  4. What's Kappa doing, handstand? Sorry hardly know any of the mascots but aha the last one looks very familiar thought seen him somewhere haha lolz

    1. Maybe. Kappa is always depicted as a mischiveous character. :)

Yeah, the last one is not only rather familiar, it's (he's) the best mascot one can have! ;)

  5. Favourites have to be Kappa and the Chap from Nara. Despite living in Japan so long, can't say I know too much about the mascots.

    2. You know, all these while I thought that big yellow ad of Hanayashiki (the panda) in Asakusa as Asahi mascot. LOL

      Delete
    3. Huh? You mean those weird mechanical pandas at the amusement park?

When you mention "big" and "yellow" and "Asahi" and "Asakusa" in one sentence, I think of only one thing: the golden turd on top of the Asahi building! :D

      Is THAT J.A.'s mascot?!

    4. You know the one big neon ad at one of the intersection there, where you go into one of the shopping alleys. Sorry, can't name the exact location. I don't live there, remember? hehehe

It's yellow, has a big Asahi can prominently featured with that Panda in the background with Hanayashiki written too.

    1. OMG! I had to curb myself from buying anything and everything there! So much cuteness!!!!!

But maybe Hello Kitty will not be such a hoot anymore during my subsequent visits - after all, you can see and visit Hello Kitty at Hello Kitty Land or something right here in Malaysia! @.@

    2. Right. Hello Kitty Land has lots of its stuff. I want to buy other cutesy Japanese items not found in SG yet. :P

  11. Hmm... nothing very interesting as my favourite mascot isn't there. Yes, it is probably alcohol related, but I doubt it. Actually, I don't have a good mascot, but I do enjoy all of the ones I saw in Osaka. Not a fan of Sento-kun... I feel I'm the only one here. :D

    1. I'm going to be very vigilant and look for any and every mascot in Japan, if that's possible. ;)

After I looked for manhole covers, leaves and random flowers that is. ;)
